Many thanks to the lovely folks up in
La Conner, Washington, for including my fabric book "The Needle
and the Sword" in the recent Quilt & Fiber Arts Festival,
an international juried show, and for giving it a first place award
in the 3-Dimensional Fiber Arts category. I'm thrilled.
The festival award winners will be on display at the La
Conner Quilt & Textile Museum (a gem of a museum housed in a
charming old mansion) until November 23rd. If you visit you
will also be treated to an ethereal installation of ghostly dyed
silk organza panels by Elin Noble AND a stunning display of
beautifully vibrant Hawaiian-style quilts by Grace Hawley.

Earlier this year, 23 Sandy Gallery in Portland, OR, and
the
University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, WA, invited book artists to
submit to
"Book Power Redux," a juried exhibition of book art focusing on
social and political issues. The exhibit
features 61 works by 55 artists addressing social and political
issues -- race, diversity,
equality, justice, poverty, war and more.
"Gun Metaphors," an artist's book I created last year in
response to the child murders at Sandy Hook Elementary School, will
be part of
that exhibition. The exhibit runs from May 30 - July 26,
2014, at 23 Sandy Gallery, and then moves to University of Puget
Sound in Tacoma from mid-August to October 15, 2014.

Alfred Stieglitz opened the Intimate
Gallery in Saugerties, NY, in 1925, inviting artists, poets and
writers to gather and exhibit their works. The Intimate
Gallery is still in business and still exhibiting work by artists
working in book arts, printmaking, photography, paper arts, drawing
and mixed media. I'm very pleased that two of my pieces
("Grand Rapids 1937," an altered book, and "It Wasn't Clear What
Happened Here," collage on an old book cover) are on display at
their Intimate Works on Paper 2014 exhibit. The exhibit opens
today and will run through June 22 -- it looks fantastic and I wish
I could be there. You can see the catalog
here.

Located in Cagliari, Italy,
the
DdA
Factory features exhibits of large reproductions of
photographic and other contemporary works. This month they
have included one of my photo collage pieces titled "Two Birds,"
which was created from magazine scraps. I'm delighted to be part of
this month's show.

Diego today to be part of the Fifth National Juried Exhibition of
artist's books and other book arts. The exhibit is hosted by
San Diego Book Arts at the Geisel Library (yes, THAT Dr. Seuss...),
University of California, San Diego, and runs May 4 - June 22,
2014...it should be spectacular!

Kelli Russell Agodon is one of our own
Northwesterners who writes stunning poetry. She has a new
book out -- "The Hourglass Museum" -- which one reviewer called
"lyrical, intelligent, magical and honest"...not bad, eh? I
am honored that she selected one of my collage pieces for the cover
of her new book. You can find the book
here.
Go buy it!

Two of my artist's books -- "16 Ways of
Looking at a Blackbird" and "The Clearing" -- have just returned
from Arizona. They were part of a beautiful exhibit mounted
by the Art Museum of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ
(a beautiful place in its own regard). Seth Muller wrote a
great article about the exhibit for the Arizona Daily Sun, which
you can find
here.

National Collage Society has selected
two of my pieces for their 29th Annual Juried Show, and I'm
thrilled. "Pneumatic Drill" and the "River Triptych" can be
seen in an
on-line
exhibit along with some pretty fabulous collage pieces from a
number of marvelously talented collage artists. Please check
it out.
